How could Music Education Hubs most effectively support musical progression: Musical Progressions Roundtable meeting write-up

The Musical Progressions Roundtable network met in June to look at how we could support Hubs to support children and young people's musical progression.

Different progressions, cultural diversity, making change happen, identifying quality, supporting the noteface, and a wide variety of other topics were covered.

The meeting was attended by 20 different organisations, including community music organisations, Hubs, schools, Nymos, Higher Education, Awarding bodies and others. We aimed to answer three central questions:

  • What practice can we share in supporting children and young people's musical progression to become 21st-century musical adults?
  • How can Hubs, with our support, most effectively support children and young people's progression and realise their musical potential?
  • What action do we need to take individually and collectively to help this happen?

And a wide variety of different topics were covered in response:

  • The purpose of the Musical Progressions Roundtable network
  • Ingredients in an environment for progression
  • What are 'musical progressions'?
  • How can we make change happen?
  • How could we support Hubs to be creating these 'environments for progression', with children and other stakeholders?
  • How could Musical Futures, In Harmony and other initiatives be involved?
  • What about engaging head teachers?
  • Embracing and centralising cultural diversity
  • Working with Ofsted to support creativity
  • What hinders progression?
  • Role models and 'goal models' for creative careers
  • Bridging the 'noteface' information gap

The attached write-up gives a summary of the discussions and an extensive set of links to relevant resources and materials.

The Musical Progressions Roundtable is currently working on a skeleton strategy for Hubs and others to create holistic progression environments for all children and young people. More to follow soon, or please get in touch to find out more.
